Pancreatic cancer starts when cells in the pancreas begin to grow and multiply out of control. The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach and is responsible for producing digestive fluids and hormones that regulate sugar levels in the blood. There are two types of pancreatic cancer, exocrine and endocrine. Most pancreatic cancers start in the exocrine cells.
Pancreatic cancer can spread to nearby organs. Due to the fact that signs and symptoms, especially at early stages, are vague, they can be mistaken for less-serious problems. That leads sometimes to delays in detection of pancreatic cancer, when cancer has spread to other organs via the bloodstream or lymphatic system. Amongst symptoms are weight loss, abdominal pain that could also be extended in the back, nausea, vomiting, yellow skin, black or bloody stool and loss of appetite.
Blood tests, medical imaging techniques like CT and PET scans, MRIs, abdominal, endoscopic ultrasounds and of course a biopsy are used in order to detect and confirm pancreatic cancer.
The treatment of pancreatic cancer depends on the stage and the type. Surgery is used when the tumor hasn’t spread can be removed. Ablation or embolization treatments, chemotherapy and radiation are also used.
