Myeloma is also known as multiple myeloma and refers to cancer that grows in plasma cells, a white blood cell that is made in the bone marrow, a material found in the center of large bones of the body. Plasma cells are an essential part of the immune system normally and they produce antibodies to fight infections. Myeloma describes a condition when plasma cells start growing and multiplying abnormally. It affects many parts of the body hence it’s called ‘multiple myeloma’.
When plasma cells grow and multiply abnormally they also release an antibody called paraprotein, the measurement of which is used to diagnose myeloma.
Myeloma differs from other types of cancer since it doesn’t exist in a tumor. A myeloma patient will experience periods of remission, with few to no symptoms and no need for treatment, followed by periods of relapse.
The most common symptoms include pain, fatigue (also known as cancer fatigue), anaemia, kidney problems and others.
Depending on the stage and the age of the patient, treatment may include chemotherapy and other drugs, radiation, surgery, stem cell transplant and plasmapheresis.
