Breast cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer types and it mainly affects women, although men can also be affected by it. It is the second most common cancer amongst American women, following skin cancer. Breast cancer is caused when cells within the breast start to grow abnormally. Most breast cancers start from the ducts which carry milk to the nipples while others begin in the glands that produce milk.

Amongst other, the following symptoms may indicate breast cancer:

  • Pain on the nipples or breast

  • Skin irritation

  • Swelling of parts of the breast or all of it

  • Irritation of the skin

  • Retraction of the nipple

Most doctors will usually recommend annual mammograms and physical breast examination to women over 40-45 years old or women that are considered in high-risk. Those tests are the most common way for women to get screened.
The diagnosis of most types of this cancer can be done through a biopsy.
